Replacing a Car Key When No Spare Key Is Left

Losing your only key doesn’t have to leave you stranded. We can still cut you a new one. The hardware store and the locksmith counter have different operating hours, so check the locksmith hours before you head over:

Keys We Replace: Car Keys, Key Fobs, and Smart Keys

Replacing a lost key is different from copying one you still have. When a working key is available, we copy it. When no key is available to copy, we make a new one from scratch. Each new key is matched to the kind your car uses:

Car keys: A newly cut key for your ignition, programmed to start the car.

Remotes and remote keys: A new remote is paired with your car, so the buttons work when we finish.

Key fobs and smart keys: A new fob or smart key is programmed to your car to replace the one you lost.

Lockouts: If the key is gone and the doors are locked, we can get you back into your car.

We replace lost keys for BMW and for select Mercedes-Benz models. We also make push-to-start keys for 2020 and newer Honda, Acura, Toyota, and Lexus models, including keys a dealer says only they can supply. As a Vehicle Security Professional registered with NASTF, we provide dealer-only keys under the Right to Repair Law.

How to Replace Lost Car Keys, Step by Step

Getting a new key takes three simple steps:

1. Contact Us for a Quote

Call, stop by the shop, or fill out the key request form. You don’t need to know which key your car takes. Tell us the year, make, and model, and if the car can’t be driven, tell us where it is. We’ll give you a quote based on that.

2. Our Mobile Service or a Store Appointment

For your convenience, our mobile service van can come to your vehicle for an extra charge. You can also book a time at our shop, where we do the same work. Our van covers Worcester County, including nearby towns like West Boylston, Holden, Shrewsbury, and Auburn.

3. Program the New Key

We program the new key, remote, fob, or smart key so your car recognizes it. Once it does, the car starts and the buttons work. We handle every step ourselves, and most keys are ready the same day.

Your car looks for a code that only a key with the correct chip sends out, so a chip that hasn’t been synced to the car won’t start it. Push-to-start keys work in much the same way, using a coil to carry the signal over a range. Once the key is cut, we connect our programmer to the car so it will accept the new chip.

When the new key works, we can cut and program a copy of it while you wait, so you drive off with a spare too.

Lost Car Keys FAQ

What do I need to get a replacement key quote if I've lost all my keys?

Tell us the year, the make, and the model of your car, and how many keys you need. To identify the type of key, tell us how you start the car, such as a metal key you turn or a fob with a push button. We give you a quote covering the new key, with cutting, programming, and materials included. For a European car, we also need your VIN.

Yes, ask us. Under the Right to Repair Law, we cut and program keys a dealership calls dealer-only, and we’re registered with NASTF as a Vehicle Security Professional. Call us or send a key request, and we’ll tell you whether we can make yours.

You only need your VIN to replace lost car keys if your vehicle is European, because we use it to find the right key. For other brands, the year, make, and model are enough to start your quote. All of this information can be found on your vehicle’s registration.

Yes, our van comes to your car anywhere in Worcester County for an extra charge. Tell us you’d like the van when you get in touch, and your quote will include mobile service.
